Summary
ave the Children is an independent non-profit organisation actively involved in helping children in poverty and in need around the world as well as within the UK. It campaigns to improve the quality of childrens lives by dealing with issues such as childrens rights, poverty and child abuse, often in areas where there are war and conflict.
Description
The charity was founded in 1919 in London, in order to raise money to send emergency aid to children suffering as a consequence of the wartime shortages of food and supplies. Although aid was initially concentrated in the United Kingdom, development through the decades saw new work in Africa, Asia and the Middle East in response to the decline in Britains colonial empire. Today, twenty-eight national Save the Children organisations participate in the International Save the Children Alliance- a global network of non-profit organisations working in over 120 countries around the world. They all share the aim of improving the lives of children through education, health care and economic opportunities, as well as emergency aid in cases of natural disasters, war and conflict. This year, Cambridge University Save the Children's Society was founded. The society organises fundraising events and also coordinates talks to increase awareness of the Save the Children cause.
