Summary
The University of Cambridge Islamic Society aims to both facilitate the needs of Muslims as well as to inform the wider student population about Islam in an effort to redress misconceptions.
Description
The aim of the Cambridge University Islamic Society is to strive to create an environment of unity whilst catering to the academic, social and spiritual needs of Muslim students and encourage learning and discussion on Islam amongst members and the wider community. We aim to meet our objectives through weekly Islamic circles, buddy support in subjects, sports sessions, be involved in interfaith...the list goes on and on. In this vein we have a plethora of events ranging from charity fasts to study circles to awareness weeks to weekly football. Membership is absolutely free of charge and open to everyone. It is our understanding that it has already been the policy of the University to permit students to wear religious/cultural dress beneath their academic gowns on graduation. Any student normally wearing the Burqa is already allowed to wear it for graduation on making a request to the University, but to our knowledge there are no female Muslim students at Cambridge who wear the Burqa and no such requests have been made to date. We support the stance of the University in catering for the religious and cultural needs of its students and point out that this ruling regarding academic dress is not a new one. As such, some other news organisations that have contacted us have decided against running articles on the issue as there has in fact been no policy change.
