Summary
HKCAS is an entirely student-run society at Cambridge University set up with the aim of raising awareness of economic, social and political affairs in Hong Kong and China amongst students in Cambridge and beyond.
Description
We feel strongly about the importance of being attuned to current affairs in the Asia- Pacific region. China with a population of 1.3 billion, 10% annual growth, 9.5 million square kilometres and a 1330 billion of US dollars surplus have received great coverage in the past decade as the rising star of Asia however, there are many problems associated with this phenomenal growth such as rising inflation, a largening gap between the rich and the poor and environmental pollution. Our home, Hong Kong, on the other hand is still trying to prove its worth in the international arena. Being one of the premier business hubs of Asia, it is facing increasing competition from surrounding areas, while at the same time coping with new challenges such as political reform, an aging population and an uneven living standard for all. We seek to develop communications and exchange between the East and the West, enlightening people on the key issues that the region is currently facing via debates, in-depth discussions and an exchange trip, open to all, to return the roots of this immense revolution. Only with knowledge, understanding and contact with prominent movers and shakers of our society at large can we better inform ourselves and contribute what we can to the sustainable development of the region. Having been established for 18 years, we have a membership base of over 1000 life members.
